The retail showrooming effect on stores this festive season

'Showrooming' is a well known term amongst retailers and is causing some genuine concern for brick and mortar retailers that revenues will be hit as a result of customers being able to access online sites from mobile devices. As traditional brick and mortar stores continue to compete with online sites this Christmas, they now have additional concerns as customers go online and compare prices whilst in their shop!

Research by Foolproof found showrooming affected retailers in the run up to Christmas in 2012. During the festive period last year, 24% of all UK shoppers engaged in showrooming with 40% buying products from a competitor after comparing prices via their mobile whilst in-store and 20% simply went into a store in the first place to review a product they later planned to buy online.

Retailers must not forget that showrooming not only heats up the competition with online retailers, but also with other traditional brick and mortar stores. Foolproof found that customers that went online via their smartphone to check prices whilst in-store, would also go on to buy from other retail stores. Customers can now find a volume of information online via their mobile about products and services, and store reviews making them a much more intelligent shopper and making it that little bit more complex to compete today.

What does 'showrooming' mean for retailers this festive season?

As discussed in another article How can retailers combat showrooming? there are many ways to ensure your retail store competes successfully with online websites and other retail stores, overcoming the threat of 'showrooming'. As much as price matching would appear to be the obvious answer, it is seldom a long-term solution as traditional retail stores are more likely to have higher overheads such as rent/mortgage, utility bills and staffing.

Retailers should focus on enhancing the in-store experience they offer and make sure customer service is a top priority as well as finding ways to engage customers and develop long-term relationships. Tablets can be used by sales assistants to allow them to quickly find product information and stock availability at the touch of a button, restaurants can reduce paper production and enhance brand image by using iPads instead of menus, staff can offer personalised service for customers who would like further help and advice. Loyalty cards and targeted promotions can be used to foster long term relationships and stimulate repeat business.

At the end of the day, people like to speak to other people and be able to see and test products and services before they buy making it doubtful that retail stores will become no more. It’s also important to note that not all purchases are reviewed and planned ahead – how often have we went out to ‘have a look around’ or visit a supermarket to buy 'just bread and milk’ and come home with an armload of shopping?  We mustn't forget those alluring impulse buys!

The retail store will remain an important part of the shopping experience and mobile technology such as sending a text message to a customer when they are nearby to the store with an enticing promotion will help improve sales and equipping staff with mobile devices will enhance customer service as they are able to find information more readily.

Mobile technology helping the travel industry

Mobile is certainly not a new phenomenon in the travel industry and has helped many travel companies - which can include travel agents, airlines, rail and bus companies - stay afloat and compete successfully.

Travel companies have felt the ill effects of the economic downturn with families and businesses cutting down on travel and searching for less expensive alternatives. This has caused some to fail and others to flourish as they try to adapt to changes in the industry.

Mobile technologies have been a beacon of hope for many within the travel industry. Not only does it help businesses cut those burdensome costs and improve efficiencies, but they are also able to utilise mobile technology to improve the overall customer experience - helping companies compete and win new customers!

So, how is mobile technology helping travel companies?

Mobile technology has changed the way people plan, research and book their travel arrangements which is creating a new way for travel agents to capture customers. A recent study conducted by Nielson shows that almost half of mobile travel searches carried out in the UK end up in a booking or reservation with almost 1 in 3 doing so through their mobile devices. Travel agents can design a mobile friendly website and / or app to tailor services towards people using mobile devices, creating an edge over competitors who are failing to respond.

A key factor for any successful travel company is to deliver an excellent customer service and develop strong relationships with customers.  Apps are providing a valuable way for travel agents to achieve this goal. You will find many apps which help customers find travel options and book via a mobile device, but there are also specific apps for travel agents such as allowing travel agents to retrieve and change any bookings whilst out and about. This ensures they are able to maintain an excellent customer service, by offering round the clock care.

Apps can also be used to improve the customer experience when on holiday. For example, travel agencies are able to provide guides to help customers find attractions, good restaurants and night life or how to get around whilst in the country.

Mobile technology can also open doors for repeat business. Travel companies can now send tailored promotions directly to a customer's mobile, increasing the chances the message will be read and helping drive demand during quiet periods. By tailoring promotions, travel agencies are able to interact in a more personal way with customers and send more relevant promotions.

Public transport + mobile = happy travellers!

The thought of using public transport will make many groan particularly for those commuting during peak times. However, the University of Porto and Imperial College London state mobile technology can improve the travel experience and overall public transport services.

I didn't think it was possible to enjoy public transport either. So, the question we’re all likely to be pondering now is, how is mobile technology making a difference to the travel experience?

For many, the journey often begins before you even step foot onto public transport and will continue after you've stepped off.  Before you get onto public transport – whether it be a bus, train or flight - you will begin to think about what time you should leave at to reach the terminal at the correct time and you will probably find out the different arrival and departure times, taking into account any inconvenient delays that may occur.

Your mobile device can come in very helpful here as a way of conveniently finding out the various arrival and departure times. There are also useful apps available that provide real time information to your mobile as to when transport is due to arrive helping you plan more accurately. Gone are the days of waiting around and not knowing what time you are likely to depart at.

A great advantage this provides is that at least if there are any unexpected delays, you know if you have time to relax and visit a shop, or wait in a café, or grab some food making the most of your time rather than becoming more stressed and anxious as the delay lengthens. More importantly, by knowing when transport is expected to arrive, you can manage any knock on effects on other travel plans and inform relevant parties of any probable delays as well as giving reasonably accurate estimates as to how late you will be.

Mobile can also be used after you have stepped on or off public transport, as a way of finding out when your next connection is due to depart and arrive at your desired destination as well as costs involved. You may also wish to buy tickets online using your mobile device to save valuable time.

There are now many other innovative apps available to help travellers plan their journeys and enhance the travel experience. There is even an app that lets you know how busy your train is allowing you to choose whether or not you wish to get on and chance standing the whole journey or wait for the next train to arrive in order to get a seat and relax. For busy rush hour commutes, this can greatly enhance the travel experience as by giving more information to travellers they are able to decide how they wish to travel and make the important trade-offs between time and comfort rather than having it decided for them.

It is important to remember that mobile technology can not only benefit public transport companies, but also related services such as retailers and restaurants within the terminals. The reason for this is travellers will often have to wait for transport and this gives businesses great opportunities to engage with customers as they have free time.

With mobile payments becoming more popular, the time when travellers can pay fares by mobile is becoming a very real possibility. In the city of Novosibirsk in Russia, you can use your mobile phone to buy a ticket for public transport. By removing the need to queue to buy a ticket from a machine or teller, makes the journey quicker. It also helps improve the experience as it not only means you no longer have to queue, but you no longer need to worry about the time it will take to buy your ticket

Mobile is making public transport more enjoyable by putting customers at the forefront and giving them more accurate information enabling them to better plan their journeys and cut out the ‘waiting around’ time as well as giving them more control over the travel experience. Communicate Instantly with Lorry Drivers

Technology is changing the way goods are transported. It reduces 'wasted time' such as trucks sitting idle and improves load efficiency helping companies cut costs and improve margins.

Mobile technology, in particular, is making it easier for companies to communicate with their drivers on the road and for drivers to communicate with companies through SMS communications.

Head office can send a text message instantly to their drivers, informing them of new routes, possible traffic jams or any changes or issues to their scheduled deliveries and pick-ups. This also allows drivers to communicate back with companies regarding completed orders, failed deliveries or pick-up attempts as well as alerting companies instantly of any other issues. This helps optimise the number of deliveries and pick-ups completed allowing companies to make more money by simply operating better.

One of our customers, a large multinational container operator with operations in the UK, Ireland and Europe wanted to be able to sustain first-class communications across all their departments, including sub contractors.

However, they soon found that this wasn't a straightforward task as they experienced problems when trying to communicate with their lorry drivers as they were subcontractors rather than primary staff. This was a big issue as they had multiple software systems and it meant drivers would not be able to use onboard computers. So how did the company communicate with their drivers?

Messaging Systems

The company tried and tested other messaging systems but to no avail. These systems were found to be costly and there were problems with lack of redundancy.

This prompted the search for an alternative provider who could send messages at a lower rate with better redundancy and still be able to confirm delivery.

Driver SMS Messaging

HSL Mobile’s cost effective pricing and message delivery confirmation helped make this an easy decision for the company. Since moving to HSL Mobile, our client is able to communicate with drivers and confirm delivery enabling efficient, reliable and cost effective SMS communications.

The company is also able to use HSL Mobile's robust messaging infrastructure to forward messages onto drivers from an automated system via the internet, making driver communications even more simple. The company also has peace of mind as if any problems do arise, they can contact HSL Mobile’s professional staff and exceptional support team to resolve any issues.

There are many other ways in which transport companies can use mobile technology in the transportation of goods. For example, send updates by SMS to customers regarding status of packages, sending emergency alerts if vehicles are in danger, sending information such as fuel usage, harsh braking and if drivers are speeding. This information can be invaluable to company operations to enhance customer service levels, ensure safety standards are meet, emergency situations are handled effectively and to increase productivity.

How are Airlines benefitting from mobile technology?

The use of mobile technology within enterprises is becoming more commonplace and one interesting case is how it is being adopted by airlines. Many airlines are now seeing the potential business benefits for SMS use within the travel industry with one of the main benefits of using SMS being cost efficiencies. Given the ever increasing price of fuel, costs are clearly a prime concern for this sector.

As such airlines are now introducing technology to various stages of the journey to improve efficiency. Mobile ticketing is being used as a means of streamlining the check in procedure resulting in fewer staff being required and generally speeding up the process – a benefit to both airlines and passengers.

Mobile technology, and SMS in particular, can also be used to enhance the passenger experience in other ways. Passengers want assurance from their chosen airline that they will arrive at their destination on time as scheduled. As such any planned or unexpected interruptions to their travel could cause not only a delay in their arrival but also have knock on effects to further activities, for instance, holidays, business meetings or connecting flights. Therefore it is crucial for passengers to be alerted to any changes to their schedule and to receive this time sensitive information as and when it is generated. SMS is therefore the ideal solution for airlines to communicate flight or service information updates as it provides immediate notifications to passengers. It can be easily used by airlines to update passengers on the move who may not have access to a computer or internet link but most likely will be carrying their mobile phones.

SMS is also used within airports for system monitoring. SMS alerts can be generated and sent to warn staff of system failures or downtime. In addition to this, SMS is also being used for communication between employees within airports and airlines.

When you take into account the requirement for increasing cost efficiencies, coupled with the pressure from passengers to constantly review and improve airlines services, it is of no surprise that SMS is taking off within airlines as they adopt mobile technology into their business not only for mobile ticketing but also for improving the passenger experience itself.

SMS is discreet and perfect for travellers on the move and considering the high read rates for SMS, airlines can rest assured that updating passengers by SMS is an effective and receptive method for receiving flight and travel information.

HSL have been providing SMS services since 1999 and the travel industry is one of the many sectors which we serve. Further information on our mobile messaging services for the transport industry can be found on our website at http://www.hslsms.com/sectors/transport-and-logistics/.
